Whitewater State Park has co-existed with family farms that have lined the Whitewater Valley bluff tops since it was established in 1919. However, residential development pressure is increasing in the scenic valleys of southeast Minnesota and the Whitewater Valley is no exception. Today, little home development activity is visible from the park, but the pressure continues.
Thanks to our volunteers in the area and recent major donations to our Samuel H. Morgan Land Acquisition Fund, Parks & Trails has purchased three parcels for the park. The most recent, at a cost of nearly $1 million has protected one-and-one-quarter miles of the Whitewater's signature bluff line and about 215 acres. Parks & Trails made this purchase in 2005 and at year-end 2006 is still holding it for sale, at cost and a likely partial donation to the DNR.
