Keynote speaker Paul Sundberg has been photographing the North Shore for more than 35 years as a visitor, a resident and then an insider: a state park manager. “The big lake changes constantly,” he says. “You can go back to the same spot time and time again and always find something new and different.” His photo collection, Seasons of the North Shore, has been in the works for 30 years; he’ll share highlights with us at the dinner. Sundberg retired in 2010 after 28 years at Gooseberry Falls State Park.
Mark and Joan Strobel, the 2012 Reuel Harmon Award recipients, demonstrate just how much impact dedicated individuals can have on resources we all enjoy. Mark and Joan have worked tirelessly to protect some of the North Shore’s most treasured state parks, including Grand Portage, Crosby Manitou, Temperance River, Tettegouche and Split Rock Lighthouse. Without their efforts with landowners, county leaders, the DNR and corporate leaders at 3M (their workplace), the North Shore would almost certainly be a different place—with less public access.
