(ST. PAUL, MN) - The Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota welcomes Gov. Tim Pawlenty's announcement today that a new state park on Lake Vermilion is currently in the works.
"For more than 50 years we've been the state's most trusted partner in protecting, enhancing and expanding the public's park and trail system," said Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota Executive Director Dorian Grilley. "We are absolutely committed to supporting a deal between the U.S. Steel Corporation and the state to ensure that this extraordinary park on one of the state's most spectacular lakes becomes a reality."
Fueled by charitable contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations, the Parks & Trails Council has been instrumental in adding more than 8,700 acres of land valued at $11.75 million to key areas within the state's vast network of parks and trails.
"This is truly a historic day for all Minnesotans," said Parks & Trails Council of Minnesota President Tim Farrell. "For every person that has ever dreamed of having a place on Lake Vermilion this is your chance to do just that while also enjoying the renowned Boundary Waters experience without all of the extreme adventure challenges."
"We are encouraged with the proposal to make a significant new investment in expanding our state park system, and we will work to support this initiative as well as the needs of the existing system," added Farrell. "The Parks & Trails Council has been making the case for an increased commitment to our outdoor treasures and this is certainly a major step in that direction."
