The other major factor underlying the ability of the 2010 Legislature to work quickly and efficiently is the political climate. The Legislature always works in a political climate, but this year, it is super-charged.
For the first time in eight years, the governor’s seat is open. Eight of the 17 candidates for governor (10 DFL, 7 GOP) currently serve in either the House or Senate. Three candidates have served previously in the Legislature and maintain close ties. We have a former U.S. Senator, a prominent prosecuting attorney and a prominent twin cities mayor all vying for a shot at being the next chief executive in Minnesota.
In addition, there are several members of the Legislature running for Congress.
Then there are Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s own future plans. While he is not saying what those are, it is clear to anyone watching that he has future plans.
Finally, if they are not running for another office, the entire Legislature, House and Senate, is up for re-election.
Politics with a big P will be alive and well this year!
