Sugarloaf: the North Shore Stewardship Association

The interpretive center at Sugarloaf Cove is a great place to learn more about the cove and the North Shore before setting off on our one-mile interpretive trail.

North Shore in good hands

Friends groups play an important role in planning, developing, maintaining and advocating for Minnesota's parks and trails. Meet Sugarloaf: the North Shore Stewardship Association, a group that works to promote the preservation and restoration of the North Shore's unique environment, including the wonderful chain of state parks on the shore.

Q: What does Sugarloaf: the North Shore Stewardship Association do?
Sugarloaf works to promote the preservation and restoration of the North Shore's unique environment, including the wonderful chain of state parks on the shore. Our preservation, restoration and interpretation work began at Sugarloaf Cove, near Schroeder. Now we work along the entire shore, with interpretive programs in public places from Duluth to Grand Portage, including many state parks. We also work with landowners to restore native conifer forests throughout the North Shore.

Q: What projects are you working on or have you recently completed?
Our ShoreLink learning cart program was a popular interpretive program at Split Rock Lighthouse, Tettegouche and Temperance River state parks last summer, and we plan to continue that program this year. Park visitors enjoy short, interactive learning experiences with the ShoreLink interpreter and her various artifacts, rocks, puppets, etc.

Q: What special events do you have at the park?

We have a full schedule of programs at Sugarloaf Cove this spring and summer, including our free monthly "Second Saturday" programs on lichens (April 8), North Shore waterfalls (May 13) and hummingbirds (June 10). Also this summer we'll have our intensive, small group "North Shore Naturalist" programs on wildflowers, geology, waterfalls and digital wildflower photography.

Q: Is there anything else that you would like people to know about Sugarloaf: the North Shore Stewardship Association?
We're working this year to open up the old fish hatchery building at the Lester River on Duluth's eastern edge as a North Shore interpretive center. Watch our progress! For program updates and registration, check www.sugarloafica.org.
