Keynote Speaker - Gordon Hempton

Gordon Hempton headshotGordon is an internationally acclaimed acoustic ecologist. Join us as we listen to Earth’s rarest nature sounds as captured by Gordon, who has circled the globe three times in pursuit of these sound portraits. We will hear sunrise circle the globe, snow melt, whales sing and discover that the Earth is music. These are sounds that fit neatly into humans’ peak-hearing sensitivity (2 kHz-5 kHz); we will explore the evolutionary consequences of detecting these sounds over vast distances. This audio-visual presentation will change the way you look and listen to the world around you.

Gordon is an acoustic ecologist who has circled the globe three times in pursuit of the Earth’s rarest natural sounds. His sound portraits, which record quickly vanishing natural soundscapes, have been featured in People magazine and a national PBS television documentary, Vanishing Dawn Chorus, which earned him an Emmy. He is co-author of One Square Inch of Silence: One Man’s Quest to Preserve Quiet.

2013 Reuel Harmon Award recipient - Mary Lee Dayton

Mary Lee Dayton’s legacy of commitment to Minnesota’s great outdoors has been carved out in a myriad ways. From leading the charge to nurture and grow our Samuel H. Morgan Land Acquisition Fund, to establishing the Wallace C. Dayton Voyageurs National Park Legacy Fund in honor of her late husband, Mary Lee has never wavered in her dedication to ensuring present and future generations of Minnesotans have access to world-class parks and trails. In 2010, Mary Lee established a program of Parks & Trails, designed to preserve parkland along the Mississippi River, which led to the preservation of 10 acres on the historic peninsula at Crow Wing State Park
