You are tasked with finding as many of the specific “items” listed below as you can, which are grouped into these categories:

Submit this form to be entered in our weekly drawing for a $20 gift card to Minnesota State Parks.
Anyone from age 1-100+ may participate, but for participants age 12 and under, a parent/guardian will need to submit the form.
Entrants are limited to one hunt per park or trail during the event season. But feel free to do them all!

#1. Bird - BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE
Friendly bird found throughout MN shows curiosity for humans as it flits around looking for seeds to eat. Male and female look alike.

#2. Bird - CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER
Small songbird with yellow cap and strip of reddish-brown on side. Female colors a little paler than males. Flit and hop through shrubs.
Amazing–how lucky you are to have spotted this bird!
#3. Birds - NORTHERN FLICKER
Flies in swooping pattern with yellow feathers flashing with each wing flap that are hidden when not in flight. Male has black mustache but female does not..
How great to spot this unique bird that’s in the woodpecker family.
#4. Birds - RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
Similar to its cousin, the white-breasted nuthatch, but with, you guessed it, a red chest. Both walk head-first down tree trunks and flit about the forest.
#5. Mammal - MINK
Blackish to light-brown with white chin. Long tube-like body with short legs and bushy tail. Lives near water and is a great swimmer.
Good eye! Such a fun find.
#6. Mammal - RED FOX
Usually red-orange in color, some yellow or black. Tend to hide from humans, so only the lucky will spot one.
Amazing that you found such an elusive creature!
#7. Mammal - RED SQUIRREL
A cute little critter with a loud bark/chatter. The white ring around its eye only adds to the cuteness.

#8. Mammal - WHITETAIL DEER
One of the largest mammals in MN yet camoflagued and stealthy. Sleeps in different spot each night. Only males grow antlers.
Nice job! Isn’t it amazing how quiet they can be.
#9. Wildflower - CANADA ANEMONE
Blooms May - July | Grows in moist fields and along shores. Has 1-3 long-stemmed flowers with white petals and large jagged leaves.
Wonderful job finding this anemone.
#10. Wildflower - GHOST PIPES
Blooms Jun-Sep | Grows in shady forests, often under pine needles. Very unusal plant that looks ghostly. Connects underground to other plants to gain nutrients.
Great! You were clearly paying attention to the ground-level to see this one.
#11. Wildflower - GOLDENROD
Blooms Jul-Sep l Grows in the sunny areas. Plant grows 1-6 feet tall. MN has 17 types of goldenrod that look similar with small yellow flowers.
Yes! This is a very common flower that’s important for pollinators.
#12. Wildflower - JOE-PYE WEED
Blooms Jul-Sep | Grows in sunny spots along shores. Pink to purple flowers. An important nectar source for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
Super job finding the Joe-Pye Weed!
#13. Tree - BALSAM FIR
Needles are thick, flat, short and blunt-tipped. They swirl around the twig. Nicely aromatic.
Excellent job spotting this fir!
#14. Tree - PAPER BIRCH
Leaf is oval to triangular shaped with jagged teeth. Bark is used in making some canoes and other crafts.
#15. Tree - WHITE CEDAR
Grows in northern Minnesota, usually in moist, stony places. Leaves are flat and scale-like and have aromatic scent.
Wonderful! Can you smell it?
#16. Tree - WHITE PINE
Needles are 3-5" and bound into clusters of five needles that are wispy. (memory device: 5 needles for the 5 letters in WHITE). A favorite for bald eagles to nest.
