Scavenger Hunt – Zippel Bay

You are tasked with finding as many of the specific “items” listed below as you can, which are grouped into these categories:

Submit this form to be entered in our weekly drawing for a $20 gift card to Minnesota State Parks.
Anyone from age 1-100+ may participate, but for participants age 12 and under, a parent/guardian will need to submit the form.
Entrants are limited to one hunt per park or trail during the event season. But feel free to do them all!

#1. Bird - BLUE JAY
Unmistakable bold blue and white feathers with crest on its head. Male and female look alike. Often heard making loud shrieks.
Woohoo! You found a blue jay!
#2. Bird - DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT
Large black bird with snake-like neck. Male and female look alike. Roost in large groups in trees near water and make sounds like an oinking pig.
Fun find! Hopefully you also got to hear it making it’s loud calls.
#3. Birds - RING-BILLED GULL
A familiar gull also found in large parking lots. White with gray wings, yellow bill with black ring. Males and females look alike.
#4. Birds - WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH
Hops headfirst down tree trunks. Small gray bird with white belly. Males have black cap/neck, females have gray cap/neck.
Great! Hopefully you got to see it hopping down a tree!
#5. Mammal - MINK
Blackish to light-brown with white chin. Long tube-like body with short legs and bushy tail. Lives near water and is a great swimmer.
Good eye! Such a fun find.
#6. Mammal - RED SQUIRREL
A cute little critter with a loud bark/chatter. The white ring around its eye only adds to the cuteness.
Fabulous! Was it making noises when you saw it?
#7. Mammal - RIVER OTTER
A semi-aquatic animal that loves to play by bellyflopping in the water and sliding down hills near water.
How great to spot an otter! Did you know that after an absence of more than a century, their range is again extending into southern Minnesota.
#8. Mammal - WHITETAIL DEER
One of the largest mammals in MN yet camoflagued and stealthy. Sleeps in different spot each night. Only males grow antlers.
Nice job! Isn’t it amazing how quiet they can be.
#9. Wildflower - HAREBELL
Blooms June-Oct l Grows in the sun or part shade along rocky slopes or open woods. Flowers are about ¾ inch long, pale blue to violet to bright purple, bell shaped.
#10. Wildflower - JOE-PYE WEED
Blooms Jul-Sep | Grows in sunny spots along shores. Pink to purple flowers. An important nectar source for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
Super job finding the Joe-Pye Weed!
#11. Wildflower - SELF-HEAL
Blooms Jun-Oct | This tiny flower grows in lawns and is considered a weed by some, but is beneficial for bees and butterflies. Bend down to inspect the delicate purple petals.
That is great attention to detail to find this oft-overlooked flower!
#12. Wildflower - YELLOW LADYSLIPPER
Blooms May-Jul | Grows in moist woods, bogs and swamps. Plant is 8-30 inches tall. Grows across the U.S.
#13. Tree - BALSAM FIR
Needles are thick, flat, short and blunt-tipped. They swirl around the twig. Nicely aromatic.
Excellent job spotting this fir!
#14. Tree - JACK PINE
Needles are pretty short, about 1-2" long and grow in clusters of two. They have serotinous cones, meaning the cone needs fire (or extreme heat) in order to release the seeds to grow new trees.
Nice job finding the Jack Pine!
#15. Tree - PAPER BIRCH
Leaf is oval to triangular shaped with jagged teeth. Bark is used in making some canoes and other crafts.
#16. Tree - QUAKING ASPEN
Leaf is rounded with saw-tooth edge and flattened leafstalk that helps with tremble in breeze.
