The Gitchi-Gami Trail Association (GGTA) continues to bolster support for and development of the state trail along Minnesota’s North Shore. When completed, the trail will run for approximately 86 miles, from Two Harbors to Grand Marais (see map). Currently, just over 30 miles are completed in various segments, which was achieved with significant support from GGTA. Today, the group remains very active in helping to accomplish trail projects. Read on to learn about recent accomplishments and upcoming projects.
Friends steadfast support continues to help trail
Recent accomplishments
- Beaver Bay segment: A ribbon cutting ceremony in May 2018 celebrated the completion of a short segment in Beaver Bay. Students from Silver Bay’s William Kelley school attended and rode the trail to their school.
- Tofte segment: A “short but sweet” trail construction project that helped improve safety for trail users was completed in 2018. It improves a connection to a local coffee shop, Coho Cafe.
- Support DNR efforts: GGTA purchased trail signs, mowing and weed whipping equipment, and a large, wayfinding highway sign that highlights a trailhead.
- Other projects:
- Completing a trail scoping document in 2016
- Improving social media presence
- Being part of the North Star Bicycle Route
- Being involved in the MnDOT district 1 bike plan
Upcoming projects
- 3.5 miles Grand Marais to Cut Face Creek: GGTA helped secure funding for planning, development, and construction of this trail segment that will extend south from Grand Marais. Anticipated construction in 2020.
- Underpass and trail connection in Tofte: This project will involve a culvert style underpass under Highway 61 and close a trail gap, creating an ~11 mile contiguous segment.
- 1.5 miles Ski Hill Road to Lutsen: This section of trail would extend the ~11 mile contiguous segment mentioned above, connecting to the center of Lutsen. Anticipated construction 2021.
- Youth engagement project: GGTA obtained a grant from P&TC to initiate a bike fleet at a school in Two Harbors and facilitate a field trip by bicycle.
