Temperance River State Park
"While thru-hiking the Superior Hiking Trail in Fall 2022, my husband and I had woken up at camp one morning to several inches of snow dusting our tent. Even though it was mid-October, the snow lasted all day, coming down especially thick on the high ridges above Lake Superior. We were especially glad to have our hiking poles with us as we “skied” down the snowy mountains in our trail runners. The thick snow hushed the forest, subduing the bright yellows and reds of the autumn leaves in a bluish white. All you could hear was the sound of our shoes crunching in snow and hot clouds of our breath crackling in the cold air. It was so peaceful. As we headed into Temperance River State Park, we spotted fresh wolf tracks in the snow, maybe only 15 or 20 minutes old. The snowflakes were coming down so thick that they were covering up our own footsteps within minutes and these tracks were barely dusted in snow. As we crouched down to admire at how enormous the wolf prints were, the hair stood up on the back of our necks. After hiking thousands of miles of trails across the world together, we’ve learned to always trust our instincts and right now they were telling us that this wolf was not far ahead of us, maybe even watching us. Respectfully and somewhat hurriedly, we hiked off the ridgeline, descending into Temperance River State Park where for once it felt nice to be surrounded by people."
