Proposed Project Overview

This project will build a 3-mile segment of trail from William O’Brien State Park’s Interpretive Center and Campground complex to the Scandia Village Center, including a tunnel under County Road 52.

This new three-mile Gateway Trail extension will make one of the state’s most heavily used trails even more popular by providing the public with exceptional new outdoor recreation opportunities, access to high quality natural resources and connections to several existing trails and parks. It is precisely the kind of project that epitomizes why Minnesota’s interconnected system of parks and trails is the envy of the nation. Extending the Gateway State Trail from William O’Brien State Park into Scandia’s Village Center will also allow state park visitors and families with children safe access to two tot-lots, a skating rink, multiple sports fields and tennis courts, restaurants and other commercial enterprises, including the pride of Minnesota’s Swedish Immigrant heritage – the Gammelgarden Museum.

Project Support
